Welcome to my Hypnobirthing page.  My name is Janice Champion – a qualified clinical hypnotherapist, ex midwife and hypnobirthing practitioner in Croydon, Surrey.  I first learnt about Hypnobirthing when I was my sister’s birthing partner 17 years ago and absolutely loved the course.  Not only was I impressed with how effective it was (my sister didn’t use any pain relief) seeing my nephew being born was the most amazing thing I had ever seen.

I have worked with many couples for almost 15 years helping them to experience a more positive and calm birth.

As a midwife I noticed a huge difference between women who prepared mentally and emotionally for labour and birth, using tools to stay calm and women who are frightened in labour.  When women release stress hormones and don’t know how to get themselves back into a calm state then the body cannot labour.  Just going to the hospital will generally send a woman into fight or flight mode because she is going out of her own surroundings.  So, it makes sense to know how to calm the nervous system to take you back out of that fear response.   Dad’s also learn how to look after you in labour so the experience is so much calmer and a more fulfilling experience for both of you.

Hypnobirthing is based on the the philosophy that fear creates tension, which then creates pain. With the aid of self-hypnosis, a woman can bring her body into a state of deep relaxation in which the body’s muscles can work the way they’re meant to during childbirth.  DVDs are shown in the class of Hypnobirthing births to see how it works and hypnotherapy is used to reduce and eliminate fears surrounding labour and birth.

The classes are both relaxing and enjoyable for you and your partner/husband and the techniques taught help eliminate fears, increase confidence and deepen the bond between mum dad and baby.  Courses consist of two classes.


How Does it Work?

Through classes, couples can learn how to achieve deep relaxation by practising methods of visualisation and breathing. These techniques are also taught to birth partners, who learn to help deepen and support their partner’s level of relaxation during birthing. By learning these techniques women are able to manage the tension caused by fear and anxiety, approaching the birth feeling calm, confident, aware, and in control.
